About Chan Family Kung Fu

The Best Version of Yourself

Since 2005, we have been building strong hearts and minds, proudly offering the San Diego area unsurpassed quality. We strive to take martial arts back to its roots as both a physical and spiritual art form that represents a harmonious way of life. In a world of seemingly unending pressures, we represent an oasis of calm and balance.
Martial arts give you the tools to stay present and focused while standing in the eye of the storm. It is this self-awareness that allows you to make the best decisions in stressful situations, and to defend yourself when needed. We promote inner advancement above outward appearance. Our traditional
approach provides grounding within the context of the modern world, as our instructors are focused on health and longevity of practice.

Choy Lee Fut Classes

Choy Lee Fut is a comprehensive authentic system of Chinese Kung Fu that includes Hand and Weapon forms, Qigong, Wooden Dummy training and Lion Dancing. The practice of martial arts can benefit all aspects of life and can be used to: improve mental focus, improve flexibility, improve cardio, improve physical stamina, learn self defense, make friends, enrich you life. It can be practiced by men, women and children of all fitness levels.

The Chan Family Choy Lee Fut system is composed of seven areas of study. Kung Fu is the practice of external strength in the classic tradition of the martial arts more here. Complementing this is the Lohan Qigong system which develops inner strength of mind and body more here. In addition to these two disciplines, Choy Lee Fut incorporates traditional medical practices such as accupuncture and massage. The medical system compliments the Kung Fu and Qigong systems with techniques for healing both oneself and others. The primary source of knowledge in these three disciplines comes from Choy Fook, who tought CLF founder Chan Heung the skills at Law Fou San.

Additionally, Choy Lee Fut incorporates a system of Feng Shui, which is designed to assist the development of balance and harmony in the external world, or macrocosm. The fifth area of study in the CLF system incorporates the tradition of Lion Dance practices and routines more here. These two areas of study were developed by Chan Heung based primarily on his experience and instruction from his uncles at Xin Hui and King Mui.

There is also a symbolic aspect of Choy Lee Fut, which incorporates a series of short writings known as couplets and their interpretation. Underling all of these practices is the seventh aspect of Choy Lee Fut, which can be likened to to an ethical basis for all the other faculties and is summarized in a collection of ten codes of conduct.

The San Diego Choy Lee Fut Hung Sing Gwoon was founded by Sifu Thomas Fuhr in 2005 under the banner of the Chan Family 5th generation patriarch Master Chen Yong Fa. Sifu Thomas has over 40 years of experience in the martial arts and is ranked as an International Master Wing Sing Tong Dragon Disciple of Master Chen Yong Fa.

The San Diego HSG is dedicated to spreading the Chan Family lineage of Choy Lee Fut.
